Empowering Women in the Marine Industry: Hollie Smith presents Women in Marine at SIBS 2024

The 2024 celebration of Women in Marine at the Southampton International Boat Show (SIBS) took a fresh approach this year, leaving a lasting impression on both attendees and the industry. Hosted aboard the Ocean Scene, this unique setting provided an intimate and focused atmosphere, significantly enhancing engagement compared to previous years.

We caught up with Hollie Smith, Founder of Boatbuilding News, host of Boatbuilding News: The Podcast, and Operations Director of Navis Consulting. With a sell-out crowd and a waiting list, Hollie believes that the event’s success highlights the growing interest in promoting inclusivity within the marine industry.

A platform for diverse voice

One of the most exciting aspects of this year’s event was the panel of four incredible women, each with a different career trajectory and at varying stages of their professional journeys. Their shared experiences, although unique, resonated deeply with the audience, offering inspiration and hope for a more inclusive marine sector.

A standout message was the importance of celebrating both equality and differences. “While striving for equality, it’s essential to recognise that women bring a different perspective to the table. We communicate differently, solve problems differently, and contribute unique ideas. These differences should be celebrated while ensuring equal opportunities for all,” Hollie emphasises. This message speaks to the heart of fostering diversity, not just in terms of gender but in the ways we approach challenges and collaborate.

The power of visibility

A recurring theme throughout the event was the significance of visibility. As Hollie quotes, “You can’t be what you can’t see.” The panel showcased successful women, serving as living proof to the next generation of female leaders that there is a clear path for them in the marine industry. Events like Women in Marine are essential for highlighting these role models and demonstrating that the industry is not just open to women but actively welcoming their contributions.

Breaking barriers

In recent years, there’s been a noticeable shift in the marine industry, with more women entering technical and practical roles. “There’s less of a barrier to entry at the foundation level, and the environment is becoming more female-friendly,” notes Hollie. This shift is an encouraging sign of progress, showing that the industry is slowly but surely evolving to be more inclusive.

The networking opportunities at this year’s event were invaluable. Although the event wasn’t exclusive to women, it naturally brought together like-minded individuals who shared common goals and experiences. These connections foster collaboration and professional growth, which are crucial for women looking to advance in a traditionally male-dominated field.

Advice for aspiring women in marine

For women looking to break into the marine industry, particularly those attending SIBS for the first time next year, the message was clear: “There are no jobs reserved for men. If you want to do something, go do it. And if you don’t know how… ask.” This empowering advice encourages women to pursue their passions in the marine sector, breaking through any perceived barriers with confidence and determination.

Looking to the future

For Hollie, the Women in Marine event at SIBS was a powerful reminder that diversity and inclusion are not just buzzwords but essential elements of a thriving industry. By celebrating the unique perspectives women bring to the marine sector and providing platforms for visibility and networking, the industry is laying the groundwork for a more equitable future.

Hosting the Women in Marine event is just the beginning of an exciting lineup this autumn for Hollie, who will also be attending the Monaco Yacht Show this week and the America’s Cup racing in Barcelona in a few weeks’ time. Keep up with her socials to find out how she’s getting on!

All aboard!
